You're right, it is true.

John often said that the thing he liked about New York was that he could
go out without a bodyguard, if using heroin didn't make people happy, no
one would use it, and from what he said, he was glad to get away from
those "mates," many of whom were probably there for a bit of reflected
glory, others of whom were people from the distant past. Why SHOULD he
have been eager to be buddy-buddy with them whenever they wanted? For
instance, considering how successful Mick Jagger has been, it's kind of
sad to see him pouting about how John wouldn't play rockstar with him,
and how it must have been Yoko's fault. The guy just can't seem to
understand that being a Beatle outranks being a Rolling Stone and John
Lennon was one of the few people in the world that wouldn't have felt
privileged to be in his presence.

Some people here don't seem to understand that. They think that since
they would have jumped at the chance to hang out with famous sixties and
seventies rock musicians, John should have, too.

And, of course, there's the idea that all The Beatles loved each other
and were always like brothers. I hate to say it, but Help was just a
movie, not a documentary. They didn't REALLY live together in a big
house.

Tell it, brother. I like your use of the term "reflected glory". Mates,
indeed.

Here's an interesting thing about Yokotard mythology. Supposedly, John was
kept away from all contact with anyone from his past, yet, again supposedly,
he managed to have a relationship with May Pang for five years without Yoko
knowing anything about it. You'd think that if he could do that, he could
get together with Mick for a couple of beers if he'd really wanted to.

I don't think he really wanted to hang out with Mick and Yoko was a
handy excuse (blame it all on the wife), but I also think Mick
threatened his ego more than May. He was pretty honest about his
lingering feelings of competitiveness with Dylan/Jagger in the 1979
tapes.
