There may be others too but this is the one I could find:

I don't think one could claim that John or Yoko sympathized
with Hiter's views.

No, they don't sympathize with his views, but they seem to *empathize*
with his situation. And they seem to have a general view that other
nations were just as responsible for WWII as Germany and Austria.
Here's an example:
[John:] ..."I think I was out talking to one of the Austrian TV guys. I
said can you name me one European country which hasn't sort of raped
the world and he said Austria actually was the only one that didn't
attack anybody else. They were always on the defensive side, I don't
know whether that's true."

Not Sharp, you're once again confirming your paranoia. Pay attention, White Shadow is your long lost pal Gerry Zekelo Chewbop, not me.
And Hungarians and Serbians applaused furiously (It wasn't true, just
Austrian arrogance). BTW, Austria started the World War I by declaring
war against Serbia.
Let's not forget that Adolf Hitler was an Austrian.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anschluss
"On the morning of 12 March, the 8th Army of the German Wehrmacht crossed the German-Austrian border. They did not face resistance by the Austrian Army—on the contrary, the German troops were greeted by cheering Austrians."
"After World War II, many Austrians sought comfort in the myth of Austria as "the Nazis' first victim"."
They played the victim card when they lost just like some people here.
I've been in Germany and Austria and I have to say that Austrians still are bitching about everything. They still have their "ordnung" whereas Germans have relaxed long ago.
John was suggesting that Austria was no worse than other European
countries, and he further hinted--by mentioning the response of the
Austrian TV guy--that Austria never started a fight with another
nation.
World history was not something that John excelled in. He was busy
mocking the teachers in school not to learn anything "useless".
It's interesting that, according to you, John is now a poor student of
world history, whereas most people think he was well informed. Why
aren't you calling him a Holocaust denier?
Most people? Well informed? :-) Who were his informers? Stefano the Crank and Fancy Pants Emilio? Why should I call John Lennon a Holocaust denier?
And look at this exchange:
--
Questioner: So what do you think about the behaviour of Austrian and
Germans during the second world war? Don't you think that they're a
little bit more responsible than the others?
John: No, not particularly.
--
There you have it. John Lennon said Austrians and Germans were no more
responsible for the events of World War II than other nations.
And he was wrong.
There's nothing wrong with saying you think he was wrong. That's how
people in free and open societies communicate. Everything is subject
to discussion and debate--even the Holocaust.
Go to Austria or Germany and have your Holocaust debate over there. When you've been imprisoned, tell them that their countries are not free and open. Maybe they will even put in the same cell with David Irving and you two can sort out your differences. :-)
