OK, we ended up here:

I agree that he has something and he hides it.
[Disclaimer: I know nuttin']
I'm not comfortable in calling it intelligence which goes beyond knowing what is good for him.

Paul's always been a curious chap, a bright boy, a quick study. His 1960s interest in the arts, in Schopenhauer, the "Beat scene" of mod london, etc. show this. He's not an inuitive genius like John: much too controlled and self-conscious perhaps. But I have no problem at all in calling the man who changed the face of popular music a great intelligence.

Who am I? (who, who)
I think I think about stuff he doesn't (and he changed the face of popular music). Yeah, he doesn't need me tellin' him....

No, not a small thing or even purely selfish.
If not shallow because I'd not know that, he's convinced me he's not comfortable/interested in issues which (I'm the judge here!) I'd consider consequential.
One need not be a John, Pete or Bono in chasing intellect, causes or controversy. But he does stand apart from that - - for good or bad.

This really doesn't bother me at all.

You have knack for making me regret voicing something which didn't seem that bad as I was writing it.

First, he has shown some interest in certain issues over the years, but an artist need not be a political artist to be an important, or at least an enjoyable, voice. The creation of public joy via the creative act is in itself a revolutionary process. Paul's obvious pleasure in music-making had as much to do with creating the ambience of the 60s as John's more aggressive agit-prop gestures. I think an artist like Bing Crosby was a sort of musical/cultural/social force, and he hardly through himself against the barricades. But in a world in which capitalism strives to reduce every object and every human gesture into mere commodity, anyone who fights this war on the imagination with work which reaches out and touches each individual with great emotional force is to be cherished, whether or not they call on us to rush the police line.

As an agitating type, I probably find it good when I see famous people with my trait.

This is my post-Lizz upbraiding. Mostly contusions, but she set me straight (well, I am).

Well - I still say Paul (in this age of TV and infinite magazines) is the more visual matter.

Not only (big deal) do I have all the Christmas 'messages'? I have loads of out-takes.
John kicks-ass.
I've written before he could have made bucks in the humor biz. Some was not fit 60's broadcast, but yeah, he had Paul whipped in that 'non-visual' endeavor. It may not have been charming in a traditional sense but John was captivating if not pleasing in those sessions. The other three could not keep up.

I expect both sides of the love/hate to not answer "Yup"?
Maybe not.

Being "down home."

Oh, thar...

But, I'll turn the "What do you know?" gun on me.
(See, I can't be more moved by 'Yesteday' than "In My Life' and a critic or expert doesn't poses the leverage to do that)

I think "In My Life" is the better - or more interesting song - and it's been covered also (by Judy Collins for one), because its imagery is more vivid and seems to address more substantial realities than "Yesterday." But it is perhaps the very abstracted nature of "Yesterday" which helps to make it the more attractive choice for those seeking to make a new inmpression with old material. It seems a bit more mutable.

I mentioned the funeral/wedding play 'IML' receives & it 'works' well for both (& not similar) emotional settings. Depending on how well it's done, it's like 'Goin' Home' at FDR's funeral. But 'Goin' Home' would not work at a wedding. (I think the tune is Goin' Home'?!?)

Plus, I missed 'Something'? It must be a tune which was in the 'much covered' category.

Plus, in the '60's AM was limited in the formatic sense: "A varied list, played by all stations"

One can't forget (nor forgive) the role of format radio in killing music, or - at least - making the attempt. But capitalism never trusts aesthetic actions: they seem too unreliable to be the source of a steady flow of profit. So it is safer to repeat what is proven, and to (at the most) promote the creation of new bands pre-formatted.

I may be jaded my insideness but I contend the profit motive, safe and 'repeat what is proven' aren't the best triad.
That is, risky, unproven and bigger bucks is the proper formula (where everyone wins).
But most most radio types don't trust the first two so they repeat the proved and stay safe (but make few bucks and induce boredom).

Ignoring dowloading or the sats...the shares for niche formats is small compared to the top few stations in a market of 40 years ago. Or, every station played the Fabs & dozens of other bands.
It's the only pablum most here would detest that has the crossover potential, now.

Hasn't "White Christmas" been covered a thrilion times?

Don't tell me you're not a 'counter'!

I haven't counted; only noticed.

Oh, "a thrilion times" is what fooled me. I thought you counted to a number I didn't know about.

I may have dreamed it but I think 'holiday' tunes or 'The Star Spangled Banner' may be "I don't know what" & um, different.
(I can get away with that, with you. You must work with the demented)

You shouldn't talk about my wife that way...

Line her up, here. She don't scare me.
(Iz she here and gonna pound on me?)

Am I supposed to wonder about the 'm'?

It's either "Michael" or "Monkeyshines." Your pick...

C. michaelshines
