Lennon's Adulterous Affair With Photographer's Wife

One of the sleaziest revelations in Cynthia Lennon's new book about John is
his affair with the wife of Beatles photographer Robert Freeman in the
mid-Sixties. At that time, Freeman was married to a stunning Swedish beauty
(I've seen her photo from that era), and for a time, the two of them lived
in a rented flat above the Lennons. This was just before John and Cynthia
moved into their Kenwood mansion.

According to Cynthia, one night out of the blue, Freeman and his wife showed
up at Kenwood. Freeman was visibly angry and demanded to see John. With
him, standing behind him in tears, was his gorgeous wife. They were ushered
in to see John in a closed door meeting that lasted quite a while with
occasional raised voices. Eventually, Freeman and his wife left, at which
point Cynthia asked John what was going on. According to Cynthia, John
merely shrugged his shoulders and went back to watching the telly as if
nothing had happened.

Cynthia says that Freeman and his wife were divorced very shortly
thereafter. (According to Cynthia, court documents showed that Freeman won
a divorce decree due to his wife's adultery.) Cynthia says she now knows
they had come to Kenwood to confront John about his affair with Freeman's
wife. What exactly was said in this closed-door meeting with John is now
known only by Freeman and his ex-wife. In any case, Cynthia did not press
the issue or pursue it any further at the time.

The point of all this is that Cynthia went on living with John because it
was the path of least resistance to do so. After all, what would she do and
where would she go without John's wealth?

I personally know what it's like to be married to an adulterer. It is not
pleasant to say the least, but like Cynthia I prefer to look the other way,
or at least distract myself from the problem. Why? Because, like Cynthia
at that time, I am married to a man who makes a wonderful salary and has
made a very comfortable, luxurious life for myself and our children. I
cannot imagine any other kind of life. Nor would I even want to try.

So I am willing to "look the other way" when necessary because I recognize
that my husband is, after all, only human. He has made some bad choices,
it's true, but his mistakes have only strengthened my resolve to do whatever
I must to keep him happy and content here at home.

Will I always succeed? Probably not. I fully expect him to "wander" again.
But like Cynthia, I recognize that I must look at the "big picture," which
means putting up with such behaviour in order to achieve a greater good for
myself and my children. It is not a happy situation to be in, and I have
shed many a tear over it, but I believe that in the end it is the best thing
for everyone involved, especially myself. It is a heavy burden I must
carry.

Perhaps some of you are married to an adulterer. If so, I'd welcome your
thoughts.
