I was thinking about this just last night, and I have no doubt that if
I ever came face-to-face with some of the regulars with whom I've
lately had some words, such as poisoned rose, UsurperTom, Francie, and
fattuc..., I'd be greeted by some of the kindest, funniest, smartest
folks around.
*cough* Then you put the bong down and screwed the pooch?
;-)
I think there's something about type in this format that conveys a
severly limited impression of its author, and, unfortunately, that's
all the impression we get to see, so we magnify it and delude ourselves
into thinking we have the full picture.
Misunderstanding a nuance or two is easily done and forgiven. Some people
are clearly understood in their malevolence. It's only the medium to a
point. The rest IS the person.
Like viewers at movies now are far noisier and ruder because they are so
used to watching videos/dvd's at home, people sit in their house in front of
an inpersonal screen and except for the forgers and true maniacs they are
expressing themselves pretty much they way they would any other place. Oh,
more vitriol, perhaps, since for some they are anonymous ( a luxury a few of
us outted people no longer have) and enboldened (or en-stupi-ned) to just
say whatever comes into their mind.
I think it is a myth that people are warped by Usenet. Warped people come
INTO Usenet. And they choose (more or less) how they are going to behave.
And/or their behaviour is modified by the very process of the medium, that
is, other assholes.
I don't mean to piss on your very nice sentiment. But I think it goes too
far the other way, and therefore is not true at all.
