I just read an article about Southwest Airlines, that mentioned that
before SWA came into the market, the CHEAPEST one-way fare from Logan
Airport in Boston to Philadelphia was $550, since United was the only
carrier.  Southwest came in with $49 fares.  United was then forced to
drop their fares almost 90%.  Airlines only compete when they have to..

And that is exactly how all businesses work. As long as
one company has a monopoly, it will be that way. If another
company sees a void, it will fill it. It IS the american way and
always has been. It has been a successful formula since
before I was born. It is ALWAYS competition that keeps
prices to a minimum.

I guess my only reason for pointing it out in response to your post
about how cheap it is for you to fly vs. the train is that on Amtrak,
you're probably more likely to be paying close to what it actually
costs to transport you (minus subsidies, admittedly) than you are on
an airline. It obviously never cost anywhere near $500 more for
United to operate their flight than it does SWA. As much as people
like to slam Amtrak and their subsidies, however, they ought at least
to admit that all the private airlines are highly subsidized as well--
more so than Amtrak ever has been.
