I went to Borders at 10:30 am to purchase the disk. I could not find
it or any display. I went to an employee and he said oh, yeah, he had
not had a chance yet to put them out. He reached into a box and
handed me one (an other guy there looking asked for 3). I'm a little
amazed. Bruce & Co. are obviously giving this a full-tilt marketing
push. I hope other retailers are a little more excited.
I deal with this stuff all the time...you're basically relying on, in
most cases, disinterested kids (who don't want to be at work anyway)
for getting this product onto the shelves. And there's really no
excuse for it...the cds aren't shipped the day of release.
I had a different experience at my Borders. There was a small
cardboard stand-alone display with the deluxe version on one side and
the basic one on the other. Below the deluxe CDs was a holder for the
free lithographs that they were offering (which was actually a bad
design because the lithographs were hard to see and hard to pull out
easily because of the CD display on top of it. But that's the fault
of whoever designed the darn thing, not the Borders employees.
Anyway, I took my CD and lithograph to the counter, and asked if I
could have a bag large enough for the lithograph because it was
snowing outside and I didn't want it to get wet. The woman very
kindly offered to roll it up carefully and put a rubber band on it for
me, so that the bag could cover it completely.
Interesting side note- I was in the same store this weekend to get the
Rolling Stone Bruce cover. At the same time, I got an (old) issue of
the UK movie magazine Empire, which had Hugh Jackman on the cover.
When I was paying for it, the teenaged cashier pointed to the Rolling
Stone cover and said, "Oh, I love him. Oh wait, that's not who I
thought it was... who is that?" And I said, "Bruce Springsteen."
Long pause. I laughed, "A little before your time, I guess." And she
said, "Oh, I know who Bruce Springsteen IS, I just don't know what he
LOOKS like. My father wouldn't be happy about that." So I said,
"Well, who did you think it was?" And she pointed to the Empire cover
and said, "I thought it was him (Jackman). It looks a little like him
but I guess he (Jackman) is younger." LOL, but in a way, I think it
was a compliment to Bruce, if she thought he looks like Jackman (who I
think is rather easy on the eyes). Anyway, she was sweet about it and
we both had a good laugh. I like my Borders- nice folks there.

Here's a somewhat related story for you.
Last summer five of us went to see Bruce at Gillette in Foxborough.
Prior to the game, we went to a restaurant my niece works at, Red
Robin.
They were playing the lamest music at the restaurant, and I said to
one of the hostesses, "I can understand you might not play Springsteen
music, but I would think you guys would have something that his fans
might like or be able to relate to." This teenager said, "I don't
even know who Bruce Springsteen is." I mentioned that that was who
was playing at the concert at the stadium that night. I then
realized she may have had more of a problem when she followed that
statement with "I don't even know where the stadium is." Keep in
mind, the stadium is right behind the restaurant--they share the same
parking lot at Patriot Place. Yikes!
