I am thinking of upgrading my router from g to n so I can get better

No.
Upgrading the router to n will not improve the performance of a g
adapter to n capability.
To realize n level performance, both the router and the adapter have
to be n.
When the term backward compatilbe is used, it is meant in reference
to a "mixed network".
Meaning, you can have an n router, and multiple pcs/adapters, some
being new n and some existing g. All the adapters will work but the g
(s) still remain at g level capability. Note: testing by various tech
mags (PC world, Network World) have shown the level of performance
(both range and speed) in a mixed network does vary, by n-router
manufacuter.
Lastly, upgrading both router and adapter to n, is not a guarantee
of improvement, if there are existing environmental conditions (metal
roofs, odd shaped household spaced, etc, the potential list is
extensive)
now causing poor performance with the g setup. Sometimes simply
moving the router, if possible, can offer improvement. Apologiez, if
this seems overly basic, it's not intended so.
