This is the link to the Toyota Tundra pickup that I see all the ads
for down here these days. It looks like it gets 13/17 mpg which is
less than someone posted on what I'm supposed to get on my F150. It
looks like they have multiple engine variations to choose from in
their models. There is no superior engineering breakthrough here. They
are limited by Newtonian physics just like any other manufacturer. If
there is a price differential it is solely due to wages (although it
looks about the same as the F150 to me) not because they are better
engineers or manufacturers.
I'm not very knowledgeable on the macroeconomic aspects of this
discussion; I know what my criteria are when shopping for a car,
though, and for years I haven't found the United States manufacturing
the sort of car I'm interested in buying - something compact (as
opposed to subcompact - no Aspires for me, thank you very much) and
fuel efficient. I would pay more for an American car of comparable
quality in those regards but I wouldn't pay the same and take a hit on
what I was looking for.

Let's say the Japanese have a 4,000 to 5,000 wage/benefit advantage
per car.

Utter nonsense. As posted elsewhere, labor is only 10% of the costs, and the Japanese pay comparable wages/bonuses to the UAW wages/benefits.
