after years of me dithering about replacing it, my old PC (1999 purchase, windows 98, 10 GB hard drive - it's small, OLD and slooooooooooow) has finally died. Never needed a better one since I almost always use my laptop and my wife almost only uses her work PC - we only used the home PC to:
* download shows and burn disks (the big thing)
* homework for the kid (word processor)
* when my laptop was in for repairs.

So, I am looking for an inexpensive (read, "cheap") PC (not a Mac, let's not argue about it, I just don't want one for a variety of reasons) that will allow me to to what I listed above:
* browse the internets (all of them)
* burn disks. Never have had a DVD burner before, that would be cool but not necessary. Cd burner is a minimal requirement.
* Office/student work. And I don't actually need a full Office suite - I can buy one through my company for a reasonable price.

We are not big gamers, so that is not a priority. We don't do major video editing or anythign else major either. Which means, I don't want pay extra to get big time capabilities in anything - I just need to browse, type and burn. I will pay a bit more for a DVD burner (as opposed to CD only). I have installed one myself before, but would prefer it came with instead)

I am scanning FatWallet, will look at the Dell site, ODepot, etc.. I would prefer something I can buy B&M just for the time angle, though.

Any suggestions for a good buy gratefully appreciated!

I'm not a Dell shill, but their new small form factor (Studio Slim?) desktops would be right in my wheelhouse if I were in the market for a Windows desktop today.

We hit Sam's Club every month or so, and they usually have some decently priced HP machines out.

DVD writing is standard equipment even on low end machines today.

You can always use OpenOffice until you get around to your work-discounted office suite purchase (I recently slicked and reloaded my laptop, and am experimenting with OpenOffice 3 *only* for productivity apps; it works with Office 2007 formats).

Otherwise:
watch the flyers...and if you go to Best Buy, just say no to all the Geek Squad extras they'll try to lay on you before you leave the store.

I was so ready to buy a Mac this year...until my main desktop went toes up overnight, and I stuck with Wondows instead.

Let us know what you get

this:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=999999300050017&type=product&id=pcmprd99400050017

and I probably could have done better (I liked the Dell small business package I put together more, for about the same price) but I needed something now (I was told at about noon), and this was now.

now, I just need to get all the torrent and burning software onto it...

If your provider is Comcast, you'll probably want this piece of freeware too (once installed, right mouse click on the taskbar icon to get your upload/download volume infomration):
