Has anyone here had extensive nerve damage? According to the doctors, I
have severed one of the nerve bundles in my left thumb completely. It has
been totally numb for over two weeks, and I have no active movement in my
thumb. The doctors say this will be permanent. Has anyone else had
success with any kind of treatment/surgery/therapy in this regard?

I'm afraid that I won't be able to do a lot of things any more - play
guitar, open jars, use a regular pepper mill, etc. Is there any hope?

I know I don't have the severed bundle like you have, but I had some severe
nerve compression in the cubital tunnel and did PT along with some
electro-stimulating thing where the tech put this solution onto this pad and
the current helped push it into the skin/muscle/nerve? That, along with
nightly splinting helped me - the splint was to help keep my arm at the
correct angle to enable the nerve to free up and get good blood flowe to the
area. I don't know which kind of doc you are seeing, but I first went to a
neurosurgeon who referred me to an ortho who ordered some nerve damage
testing done by a neurologist and then back to the ortho for the PT. I
still have some lingering issues, but I am 75% and still improving my grip
strength is much, much better - I think nerves can regrow/regenerate? it
just takes lots of time. I wanted to avoid surgery and so far, so good.

I can also tell you my dad had an unfortunate lawn mover accident 30 years
ago that did some significant nerve damage to his thumb and a couple of
fingers and over time he is better, but sometimes especially in cold
weather, he has issues with feeling and numbness. He doesn't like going to
the doctor and did nothing except the stitching of the wounds - no follow up
at all.
