What's up with the throwing rocks? It doesn't quite sound like the
construction worker cultural equivalent of whistling.

There was a lot of construction going on in Tehran then, and they brought all these workers in from the country, where things were more conservative and where most women wore veils... They waited until I had passed a ways, and then threw them, obviously not trying to hit me, but send a message.
To show you how "liberal" some Iranian men were at the time... my parents' driver, Faraj, decided to get married, so he asked some friends if they had any daughters... He met the first one, but her skin was too dark. The second one was used to wearing a veil, and even though he could have ordered her NOT to wear one, he was a sensitive guy and knew she would feel uncomfortable without one. The third was okay, and they met, went on a couple of dates (which usually doesn't happen), and then married... This whole process took place within the 2 months I was there. They had the wedding reception at our house, with the men taking turns sneaking into the kitchen where bottles of vodka were hidden, drinking it straight, so they could pretend they were drinking water. The next morning, Faraj's friends came over to view the bloody ***...

P.S. Joe, yes, I am uncomfortable with the way women are treated there; I have lots of stories. But where you and I differ, is that you believe we have the right to tell them how to live.
