Have listened to the album at least once or twice a Day since the day
the MP3's leaked. Just now read the Official Lyrics. This album is
sounding like more of a Masterpiece the more times I listen to it.
The problem with this material for a critic is that several of the
songs require multiple listenings before their entire message can be
digested. While on first listening, this may sound quote/unquote
"Generic" in the same sense as the Human Touch album, it actually is
not Generic at all and one can realize that with repeated listening
and with studying the lyrics. As for the Reviewer that called it
Generic, don't know what his methodology is for Reviewing it, but if
he only listened 2 or 3 times and did not study the lyrics, he is not
giving justice ot his review.
having not listened to the songs, but reading the lyrics I understand
where the notion of "generic" comes from. Once again, Bruce reverts
to the standard verse, chorus, verse, chorus, verse chorus arrangement
that he has used exclusively since the River. What happened to
narrative stories that were the hallmark of his earlier writing?
and I'll be damned if I can figure out what the songs are really about
from reading the lyrics....the extensive use of adjectives, metaphors
and analogies:
white roses and misty blue eyes
red mornings, then nothin' but gray skies
a cup of coffee, a heart shot clean through
the jacket you bought me gone daisy gray-blue
you're smiling now but you'll find out
they'll use you up and spit you out now
your head's spinnin' in diamonds and clouds
but pretty soon it turns out
what happened to the guy who wrote "There is a dark cloud rising from
the desert floor"
c'mon keep it simple.
