a few other people here, I'm a social worker who makes a living

stretch, but I still have far more financial security and a much
higher standard of living than the majority of the people I work
with. Do I need to have suffered from schizophrenia or dealt
personally with homelessness (or had a direct loved one who did) in
order to effectively do my job? There are some people who would argue
that I should- lots of addiction counselors insist that you need to be
in recovery yourself in order to do that type of work- but I'd argue
that's not the case any more than a doctor needs to have cancer in
order to treat someone with it. So no, I don't think there's anything
inauthentic about Springsteen singing about the things he does just
because he doesn't directly live them.
