Re: (NBC) ipod or mp3 player?

Just for the record - running a separate operating system within a
shell of another operating system is one of the damn dumbest ideas I
ever heard of. It's only necessary because, as someone said (was it
Laurie?), Apple is a closed system. The only reason I commented is
because closing their system was one of the biggest mistakes in the
history of business - equivalent to the smirk invading Iraq. At the
time it occurred Apple had the best operating system and if their
owners had realized, like Gates did, that hardware would be nothing
but a commodity business in the future, they never would have made
that decision.

Of course, the flood of cheap PC knockoffs made by other companies is what opened up the market to every family being able to afford a PC in this country. Best decision Gates ever made.

Like in Iraq it's game over. Apple isn't going to make any significant
inroads into the corporate market until they open up. The money they
are making today is primarily tied to the Ipod and Itunes and they are
hoping the Iphone in the future (personally I doubt this because they
made the same mistake again, they attempted to close the system).

Exactly, and now that the masses (like me) are looking into buying an mp3 player for themselves, not just their teens, this is going to change dramatically. People who would buy an iPod for their teen because they have to have the "in" thing, are not going to spend the extra money when there are products such as the SanDisc and Creative Labs products out there. I bet within a year, mp3 players with at least 20mb will be $50. They've got to be cheaper to make than a discman which sells for $30.

Jobs
isn't looking to open up the music business by removing DRM out of the
goodness of his heart - he knows Itunes is the biggest brand out there
right now and folks are going to be coming after him. You mentioned
NBC. Exactly - why should any of these people who produce the content
allow Apple or Steve Jobs to set the price they get for their product?
Because at the moment he has the dominant distribution system? It's
not going to happen. If Jobs is so about 'openness' then let him open
up his hardware/software and distribution system to other platforms. I
don't download from ITunes but can I take a downloaded file of any
content and play it on any platform without having to spend an
inordinate amount of time trying to manipulate around Job's bull***?

It's too little too late. He made a bad decision again to make iPods proprietary.

Bottom line - great technical company but run by some of the goofiest
people I've ever seen.

See why I don't like this subject? For some people it's like it's in
their blood.

Zeke - no offense. I simply disagree with your assessment of the
future with regards to that company.
