Looks like Merv Griffin is in bad shape. I remember back in the 60s and
early 70s my mother and father used to watch him every night. My mother
thought he was great, but I laughed at what I considered his shallow
palavering. I also hated, then, that one of my sisters loved Shirley Temple
movies.
With the passing of Tom Snyder a few days ago, I read a tribute in which the
columnist said that Tom actually SPOKE to the people he interviewed, and was
interested in what they had to say. The columnist, from LA, said that the
modern crop of talk show hosts, Leno, Letterman, and O'Brien don't do that.
They go for the gag and scheduled laughed all the time, and then cut to the
promo clip. She said that Tom, Johnny, and others of the former generation,
listened, and conversed with their guests, and we the viewers, seemed to be
part of the conversation.
Forty years later I can now see what my mother liked about Merv. He wasn't
"edgy", he was relaxed, and relaxing. He introduced interesting people to
interested people and hosted a conversation. Today's generation, as has
been noted often, has lost the art of conversation. It's a shame. It's a
shame I didn't appreciate what my mother knew back then. I can only say
that one thing I have learned along the way is to love Shirley Temple. My
sister had me beat by decades.
