Wright and Peter Rossi funded by the U.S. Department of Justice
entitled: "Armed and Considered Dangerous: A Survey of Felons and
Their Firearms" (N.Y.: Aldine de Gruyter, 1986).
They surveyed 1,800 felons serving time in prisons across the nation
and found:

I don't know Steve. I don't put a whole lot of stock into some of
these academia studies of crime....I think the biggest drawback is
when you're dealing with criminals you're dealing with liars....and I
wonder about their honesty when responding to these queries..

81% agreed the "smart criminal" will try to find out if a potential
victim is armed.

I think that goes without saying....

74% felt that burglars avoided occupied dwellings for fear of being
shot.

I'm not sure its a fear of being shot...as much as a fear of being
caught. The usual burglar never approaches an occupied
dwelling.....it's a very dangerous type of burglar who does. I don't
suspect that type would really care about guns in the house, as he's
going to be prepared to kill someone in there anyway....

80% of "handgun predators" had encountered armed citizens.
40% did not commit a specific crime for fear that the victim was
armed.
34% of "handgun predators" were scared off or shot at by armed
victims.

I really don't know any way to challenge the above, but it sounds sort
of high to me...

57% felt that the typical criminal feared being shot by citizens more
than he feared being shot by police."

Maybe because they're not sticking the gun in the cop's face and
robbing him?

You make a good point though. In the old days when they used to have
armed robbery problems in fast-food joints, they'd stick a SWAT team
behind the counter dressed as employees. They'd shoot the first person
who came in with a gun to rob the place. Robberies in fast-food joints
would drop to zero for the next six months.
