I would get the new one, Neon Bible, and work back. I just recently
bought their 2 albums and their EP. I found that it was the type of
music that takes several listens before it starts to grow on you. I
found that the new one caught me before the other 2 did. The new one
if a better album is released this year, I'll be very surprised, and
that includes the knowledge that a bruce/e st band record is all but a
given.

In my opinion, this is a good band who have been (over)blown into
greatness. I've listened to Neon Bible about 20-30 times, and while I
think it's pretty good, the raves that it's been getting are an utter
mystery to me. The next time that I can even remember more than a
line or two from any of the songs on the album will be the first.
Perhaps they're the White Stripes of the 2nd half of the decade; the
good but not great rock band for whom rockers desperate for something
to believe in place their hopes. IMO, and all that, of course.
I've tried listening to them several times, and I gotta agree with you. I just can't get past that voice; I hate that guy's voice.
