Most UNDERrated Bands, ever

Following up on Gully's post, which deserves its own thread.

Who are the most underrated bands? And WHY? Not just that you like them,
what did they do that made them special?

a few ground rules - if you're in the RnR Hall of Fame, you can't be
underrated.

If you never had a recording contract, you aren't rated at all...

So, the rest of the world is available: any band (or solo performer) that
had a contract, but is not in the Hall of Fame.

I'll start with two bands that sometimes intermingle:

Los Lobos - very good musicians, play many types of music - tejano or
norteno influenced rock, blues, roots rock, R&B, etc. - and play it well,
with a unique sound.

Dave Alvin, with or without the Blasters - strong songwriter and guitarist.
Has written some of the best underbelly-of-world songs ever, and while his
voice is not as strong, it delivers the songs in a very effective manner.
