I ran into the same problem a couple of years ago. I found out that Adobe
was still making the Cool Edit 2000 software available to people that had
purchased it previously. If you still have your serial numbers, the
software and registration keys can be found here:

Back then, I called Adobe, and they were able to provide me with the serial
number info from my purchases. I don't know whether they are still doing
that now, however.

Can anybody recommend a good free or cheap wav file editor? (My new
computer can't tell that I purchased Cool Edit 2000 and keeps telling
me I'm running a trial version so it won't let me save, which is a
fairly important operation.) I've used Cool Edit for years and love it
but they don't make it anymore. All I need is something to do basic
editing - level changes, fade ins and outs, splitting big files and
joining together small ones. Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance.
Andy
