I made the mistake of making a half-hearted defense of Gibson Saturday
morning, before the facts about his bust were all out. Jeesh.
He's done some cool stuff and some of the dumbest things ever made
("What do women want?")
You pick up a real attitude in his interviews, even when he's not
discussing religion, politics or the Holocaust. Not a nice guy, it
seems. And a guy with some problems and some demons, for sure. I always
figured that part of his passion for "The Passion" was to expiate some
of the bad *** he's pulled, both professionally and personally.
But I decided long ago that most of the great actors -- DeNiro,
Nicholson, Pacino, etc. -- were probably real asses in person and you
wouldn't want to ruin the admiration by ever meeting them. You could
probably apply that to most great artists, athletes, etc. The real
geniuses put so much of themselves into their craft that they don't
leave an awful lot for other people.
Interestingly, though, even though we consider Gibson a "religous
conservative," he's done some Bush-bashing in connection with his
upcoming flick:
Film star and director Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on US
President George W Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric
rulers of the Mayan civilisation in his new film Apocalypto.
The epic, due for release later this year, captures the decline of the
Maya kingdom and the slaughter of thousands of inhabitants as human
sacrifices in a bid to save the nation from collapsing.
Gibson reveals he used present day American politics as an inspiration,
claiming the government callously plays on the nation's insecurities to
maintain power.
He tells British film magazine Hotdog, "The fear-mongering we depict in
the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys".
