Re: NBC: Anyone Else Think That Dan Brown Is a Terrible Writer?

I've never read anything by Dan Brown and have absolutely no interest
in doing so. Nor do I have any problem pre-judging him to be a terrible
writer. No book stays on top of the bestseller lists for that long
unless it's powerfully awful crap.

I'm not going to NOT read a book just because it's a bestseller. That
would pretty much eliminate authors like Stephen King and Grisham, as
well as albums like Born in the USA and movies like Star Wars. But I
think there's something to be said for avoiding books that appeal to
people who usually don't read. That same person's idea of a good CD
might be one of Rod Stewart's Songbook albums, and they'd likely go out
of their way to tell you that it's the first CD they've bought since
the soundtrack to "Titanic".

I try to alternate between serious stuff and more light, page-turning
stuff, so it's not like I live on a diet of complete literary junk
food. But I read to be entertained. And what entertains me is
rarely highbrow. Hell, I've kept up with all of Sue Grafton's alphabet
mysteries, and even read a fair number of VC Andrews books back in the
day. I don't read Danielle Steele or Jackie Collins, but that's only
because they don't interest me (and, well, for all my liberal and
progressive thinking, because I'm a guy and I wouldn't be caught dead
reading them even if I wanted to) and I don't have a problem with
people who devour those books. Reading junk is still a better use of
someone's time than rotting in front of a TV. But this Dan Brown book
I'm reading is just so bad that I don't know whether to keep reading to
see what trainwreck paragraph comes next, or if I should stop so that
it's in good enough shape to take back to Target for my $7.49. I'm
still going to try the DaVinci Code, but I'm not holding out much hope
for it based on what I've read so far and on disucssing this with
people who feel the same way about Brown's books.
