Steve S.

Can you tell from where I am posting from my IP address? How does one do that anyhow?

You're going to be so sorry you asked.

Warning: High nerd factor in the following discussion...don't enter without pocket protector, birth control glasses or caffeine.

The answer varies depending on your newsreader client. You probably have an item on your menu bar that says something like "View | Headers | (full/compact/normal/all...terms vary between software types).

Selecting these options will variously display more --or less-- header information (which is included at the very end of this post). Among the pieces of data in there will be your posting IP address. The IP address you posted your question from was:
69.34.89.106 (NNTP posting host: newsgroups are a data type known as "network news transfer protocol: NNTP)
It also looks like you are an earthlink.net customer, although I think you are DSL user whose telephony infrastructure is provided by Sprint.
Oh yeah, and you are a MAC user running OS X and you use MT-Newswatcher to read your groups.

But this is just the starting point...

You can use many tools to get more information about IP addresses (just Google "IP lookup" for some starting points): http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=ip+lookup&spell=1

The ARIN WHOIS database search is one that maps IP addresses to network owners:
http://www.arin.net/whois/
Entering your posting IP address there tells us the IP address is part of a block (69.34.0.0 - 69.34.255.255) belonging to the Sprint DSL Network. It also tells you that the adminstrative home for these addresses is in Floria (but I'm pretty sure you don't live in Florida).
At least I know

There are other tools online that will resolve IP addresses to the gross physical location of the network. Of course, you can Google this too:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=ip+address+locator&btnG=Search

One such is the first result returned from the above search:
http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm
This tells us that you are probably located in New Jersey, maybe near a place called "Asbury". Different online tools may return different results, depending on how they resolve their answers.

You can also run a traceroute from a Windows desktop (presumably MAC operating systems offer similar utilities). This simply reports the route a packet of data takes from its own IP address to one you name (and the route will be different each time). This one shows 18 separate network "hops" to get to from my IP address to yours. I'm not in Virginia, but the network I'm using is. You'll recognize some state abbreviations (VA,NJ), some airport three-letter codes (DCA, for example) that are used in the network descriptions. I also happen to know that there is a big network operations center in Ashburn, VA (the "ashbva" shown below).
