I agree with all of it except the "as you've stated" part -- I didn't
say that the singer is literally dead a la The Rising. At least,
that's not the intent of what I wrote. The last verse indicates that
he is alive, meditating on his doom, seeing it over and over again.

Yes. It's nearly the image that Bruce brought up when he did his
Sirius interview a couple months back, that of hitting the wall or
going over the cliff or whichever metaphor he used.
