People often do their own plumbing and electrical work without the
"required" inspection. I built a 1,400 sq foot addition to my house by
myself and was able to get it to pass all inspections (elec, concrete,
framing, plumbing). Most people don't do these things, especially if the
work is done without adding to the structural footprint.

BTW: I hate McMansions, too. Talk about tacky.
