Is it possible that you are reacting as much to his audience as you are
to Bruce himself? I agree that his touring practices- prices, types of
venues, cities played- can be maddeningly frustrating. And no one
can be blamed for that other than Springsteen himself. His choices of
$100 ticket prices and focusing on a narrow if sizable segment of his
audience and reluctance to release any significant amounts of live or
new studio material havne't exactly endeared me to him over the past
few years. But what really puts it over the top for me are the people
who apologize and rationalize all of that, and worse, who see the real
problem as being with those who dare complain about those things.
That sort of unquestioning fanboy mentality is present in all forms of
pop culture and is hardly unique to the vocal minority of Springsteen
fans who engage in it. But should we let our perception of the audience
influence our opinion of the art? When that happens, it becomes our
own problem and indicates that it's time to get a little perspective.
The qualities that attracted you to his music in the first place
haven't changed, and IMO are still there to varying degrees in his
newer material and performances.
