Granted, 1 death is too many. But less than 1,000 die from Katrina and you would argue that all but 1% of America is living in squalor, unbearable conditions.
That isn't what I said. Do you have a problem with reading comprehension? What I said was the policies of this administration are designed to benefit those at the top of the income scale in the hopes they will have pity on the rest of us peons and some of the money will then 'trickle down'.
So do me a favor - don't put words in my mouth.
"The point being they aren't trying to build societies where 1% of
the population lives in splendor at the expense of the bottom 25% that lives in squalor."
I'll grant that you did argue that only the bottom 25% of Americans are living in squalor. Apologies for the misquote.
15,000 die in Europe and you passively ignore that as irrelevant?
It's irrelevant in terms of Balloon's original argument.
"... they do much better in terms of providing
adequate health care, housing, schooling, etc. than does the US for ALL their citizens. "
which makes Steve's response to you about the housing right on target, and maybe even the healthcare if the docs really were living it up on the beach at the time. Although I imagine the next several posts will likely focus on clearing up the important fact of whether or not hte word "superior" was actually used.
I can read. It says "THEY DO MUCH BETTER IN TERMS OF PROVIDING ADEQUATE HEALTH CARE, HOUSING, SCHOOLING... " what have I missed? Do you forget what you write?
You can't claim that everywhere else is better than here, then ignore the places where it isn't.
I didn't claim any such thing so again I ask, can you read? What I said was different societies are attempting to accomplish different objectives. You can't take statistics that make your society look good and compare them to another society that may be trying to accomplish something entirely different. This is usually done by those who are intellectually dishonest but then want to lecture then rest of us about honesty.
I think, to Steve's point, 15,000 died because their housing was inadequate, despite your claim that "THEY DO MUCH BETTER IN TERMS OF PROVIDING ADEQUATE HEALTH CARE, HOUSING, SCHOOLING..."
1,000 died from Katrina, and the world community is up in arms. 15,000 died in Europe - why aren't you up in arms? Have they solved that problem since then?
Your expectations of others and their arguments should apply to you too.
I would argue that 1,000 deaths proves that the levees were not adequate. I would similarly argue that 15,000 deaths proves that living conditions were not adequate.
Then make the argument. Do you seriously think that 15000 died because a bunch of lazy, socialistic European doctors refused to come back from vacation?
I believe they are... but is the number of people who show up on your doorstep with nothing but the bathtub they used to get here relevant in the discussion of who's handling what and how their doing at it? I belive it is.
Also, I don't have much knowledge of schools or healthcare in UK, France or Germany. But how many people, legally and illegally, immigrate to UK, France and Germany each year? I don't know the answer to this, but it seems a reasonable question to bring to the table when discussing the quality of services provided to all people.
Are all humans not entitled to decent medical care? Or do you think medical care is only for the privledged?
While increased immigrants is not an excuse for failures in social services, I do imagine it would make things easier to bridge the gap if we locked down the borders so we could focus solely on the people who are here now. Maybe lots of people immigrate to France every year, and they still manage to provde 'adequate' services to everyone. I don't know. Just wondering.
Do you mean this to be taken seriously?
