You are still missing the point. There were two separate events. The
hurricane and the subsequent flood. No one expects the government to get
everyone out. It's impossible. We expect the government, primarily because
it has access to heavy equipment, to be ready to go with the necessary food
and supplies immediately after the event. Not 5 days after the event. It is
not the job of government officials to make judgments as to why someone did
or did not leave. It's their job to get the supplies there - simple as that.
No excuses.
In this case the flood created unusual and somewhat different problems. Only
the federal government had the resources to deal with it. If it had been a
few inches of water that stayed around for a day or so the locals who had
stayed behind would have been able to help each other until the water
subsided. It was much more water than that and they couldn't help
themselves, much less anyone else. It was a once in a lifetime catastrophic
event and numerous officials in the federal government fucked around while
people went without food, water and ice. No one thinks the feds should have
gotten everyone out of the city immediately. That would have been an
impossible task; however, given the situation there should have been
supplies in that city by Tuesday morning while the organization was put in
place to get the people out. That's what didn't happen.
Again, the locals will judge at the next election whether or not they feel
their local leaders acted appropriately. All I know is I want the Feds to
get their act together. That could be me next. If they want to go on
vacation then give us the equipment, we'll take care of it ourselves. If
they want to fight a war do it without our National Guard. If they don't
think they can handle getting the food and other supplies down here in time
then let us know now - we'll take care of it ourselves. See my point - let
us now know, not after some of us who couldn't get out have gone five days
without food and water.
You know why the R's voted down the commission in Congress? I'll bet you
that Barbour, Trent Lott and guys like that have already told smirk that
what he would hear is a lot of people talking just like me. I don't really
give a damn if the feds want to do the job or not. I don't give a damn if
the locals want to raise taxes some to get the necessary equipment. All I
want to know is if you say you are going to do something are you going to do
it or not. If you don't think you can handle it just let us know and we'll
make other arrangements.
