Yeah, I guess it's kinda funny that way. I was talking to some folks
and they were asking what I do, and I realized that I mostly spend
time with the family these days. I pretty much dumped most of my
hobbies.
I need a reality check.
Nothing wrong with a fellow spending time with his family, but
yeah, some time pursuing hobbies is nice too...
I'm finally getting around to rebuilding a shelter with a porch swing
that was wiped out during Hurricane Wilma. Of course, the reason I'm
doing that is to get ready for my brat's birthday party.
We got slammed. And there was surprisingly no looting:

damn, that looked pretty bad. when was that?
10/24/05. We were without power for 15 days. The fact that we have a
well meant that we needed power to wash our hands and flush the
toilets, so it was a real treat going through with a 2 year old. I
have a 5500 generator I took from the office, and that would power the
water and most of the lights and TV, but we had to turn all that shit
off to use the hot water heater. Not to mention, all of the gas
stations were without power, and the ones that weren't had huge lines.
I had a full tank in the El Camino...
It was supposed to be a Cat 1 storm that came across the state from
west to east, and unlike any other hurricane I remember, it built up
power coming across the 'Glades. The eye passed close to our house
and the whole hood, as you can see, was a mess.
I lost my roof (not in a "seeing daylight" way, but the tile) and
because it was the year when all of those storms hit including
Katrina, it was next to impossible to get a roofer, even being in the
biz. It took 10 months to get roof tile and the job cost an
insurance-financed $57,000!
The good news is no one was hurt, but it taught us a lesson about
believing the news reports.
ok, so what did the news reports say?
Contrary to all of the usual hysteria, that it was gonna be a Cat. 1
storm. We have normal summer storms occasionally stronger than that.
I went through Andrew in Broward County and it was nothing compared to
Wilma.
Did you get hit by Opal? That thing was so strong by the time it hit
atlanta and even north carolina, it was ripping the roofs off houses.
I thought storms like that lost their power when they hit land.
They do begin to lose power when they hit land because the ocean is what
powers it
But in the case of Wilma, the power of the storm actually increased as
it shot across the state. Granted, much of that was Everglades, but
they don't usually do that.
