Exactly how does a person make ambient music in the first place?

Hey everyone:
I was looking around several different web forums about ambient music
and looking at some of the responses to the above question. Now,
without the philosophy, exactly how does a person do it? I mainly work
in Fruity Loops 4, and that's about it. I've actually wanted to get a
detailed guide to making ambient music in that program.
Anyone care to respond?
