Some individuals think it's OK to play doctor with little kids, drive
drunk, or burglarize your home. Some businesses think it's OK to dump
dirt into rivers and streams, or kill the ocean floor with bottom
trawlers. A totally Free Market isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Somewhere between anything goes and a straight jacket lies a decent
balance.
There is a big difference between a free market and anarchy Robert. If
only governments would restrict themselves to enforcing the laws, I
would be a very happy guy.
Hey, just this minute our local news just said a cop in Fairbanks
pulled over a suspected drunk driver, discovered she was texting, and
arrested her under our new anti-texting while drive law. Yahoo!!!
See, there are people who actually do need someone to do their
thinking for them.
Once again it is a big leap from enforcing laws to telling you what
kind of car you should drive or how much a local merchant who has
invested the risk capital into a business, what he or she can charge
for their product or service.
Balance is in the eye of the beholder. Taxing a vehicle because of
the damage it does to the environment might not seem like a bad idea
to some people. You can damage as much of the environment as you
choose, so long as you pay for the damage.
It's all just a way to separate people from their money. The purpose of taxation should be to raise revenue, it should have no other purpose, and there should be a cap on the amount of tax that any person should be required to pay.
