I recently discovered something potentially lifesaving in an episode
of Mythbusters, where they lower a small car with closed windows
and doors - and Adam inside - into a swimming pool.
Adam had difficulty escaping. Below a certain depth it was impossible
for him to open either a door or a window due to the differential
pressure between the water outside and the interior air.
And the critical depth was surprisingly (and to me, worrisomely)
small -- just a few feet was enough to trap Adam. Waiting until
the water had completely flooded the interior (equalizing the pressure)
worked only with careful planning and some practice; usually he couldn't
hold his breath long enough. This method would be a very long shot in
a real accident where people would likely be stunned or disoriented
and where the vehicle came to rest against obstructions etc.
I don't doubt that what you say is true. In addition to the incident you cited, I'm aware of a similar incident in a lake in Orlando, Florida. There was a circular road around the lake, and when approaching the lake one would be required to turn either right or left onto the circular road. One night 4 teenagers just went straight through and into the lake. Four healthy kids drowned.
The difficulty of opening the door is something I would have seen coming (due to the large surface area). But not being able to roll down hand-crank windows is something I would not have anticipated (but it makes sense).
This is just another reason why dating heavy women makes sense. They float well.
