Since the rear wheel has a radius of about 12 inches, if you apply 600
ft. lbs of torque to it, you get 600 pounds of thrust at the tire
contact patch and
that causes 600 pounds of tension in the final drive belt.
I dispute that calculation. Because the radius of the final drive pulley (at the rear wheel) is smaller than 12 inches, you'll actually have a tension in the belt that is higher than 600 lbs.
For example, if the pulley radius were 6 inches, it would require 1200 lbs. of belt tension to generate 600 ft-lbs. of torque.
The observation above was the reason for my question about pulley radii. I suspect that belts going over larger-radius pulleys can in general use narrower belts because the tension forces are lower to generate the same torque.
