I second David's recommendation of an MP3 player. I've tried most
media - cassettes, CDs, minidisk... They all require you to lug around
a bunch of media. Minidisks were the best for that, but MP3 players
beat them all to hell. When I put the 80gig I-pod in my shirt pocket,
I have ~600 CDs, plus more than a hundred podcasts, a bunch of photos,
and it's still only about half full.
Good to know you've got access to your photos while riding ;-)
I've experimented with ear buds while riding and found music to take a
sufficient amount of bandwidth away from the task at hand to become a
nusiance at best, potentially a danger. If the ride's sufficiently
boring you long for entertainment, you're on the wrong vehicle and/or
road.

In my state, in-ear devices, headphones, etc for anything other than
rider-2-rider comms or hearing protection are illegal when riding. If
they weren't, the easiest, if not the cheapest solution would be a set
of earbuds and an IPOD.
