Maybe some of you knowledgeable folks have run across this before.

I finally had to replace the battery in my '84 Venture Royale and wound
up with a small problem. This bike has a sensor that was plugged directly
into the battery by removing one of the caps and replacing it with this
sensor. The lead also has a 680 ohm resistor in series with the wire
before heading off to the instrument panel.

Just out of curiosity, was it supposed to plug into one
particular cell or would any one of the six cells work
equally well ?

Given that the battery is six cells in series, if
it was position sensitive, it would likely be measuring
something based on voltage between that cell and
either +12 or ground.

If it didn't care which cell, it's probably testing something
other than voltage. Temperature perhaps ?

Incidentally, I always figure that connecting something I
don't understand up to a voltage source may do something
nasty even if I don't immediately let the smoke out.

If it's purpose is to sense low level, you'd think it would be just a
moisture sensor. If so, dipping it into some kind of conductive
grease followed by an electrical tape wrap might work.
