All joking aside, I think Don does make some very valid points. The
ATGATT argument runs right into the wall of convenience and comfort at
times, and I am sybaritic (sp?) enough to weigh in on the side of
convenience and comfort when it suits me.

I dunno - I guess I just don't see the gear as all that much of
a hassle. The jacket takes pretty much no time at all to put on,
and unless it's really warm weather you'd be wearing SOMETHING
anyway. Ditto the gloves - I' m hardly going to worry about the
few seconds each it takes for those. I have to admit I don't wear
anything special in the pants department for a short ride, so maybe
I'm not doing an "ALL the gear, all the time" - just jeans do fine
for a mile or two to the store. That leaves the boots and helmet.
Together, they probably take, what, two minutes, tops? Look,
if you're in that much of a rush that two minutes are a serious dent
in your schedule - you have more problems than whether or not you
should be wearing the gear. Time to re-check your priorities.

I certainly agree that Don's choices are his to make, and I'll never
argue against those once the decision has been made (at least,
assuming it's been made with the awareness of the risks, and I'm sure
Don has enough experience to have that awareness). But I just
have never really seen this as much of a "convenience" sort of
question. If you're so concerned about "convenience" that you can't
take the couple of minutes to gear up (that you otherwise WOULD
do), then I'd say: let's forget about the gear for the moment. Are
you taking even a few seconds to make sure the BIKE is good to
go?

Bob M.

I always wear my helmet at home because I have to.
I always wear jeans because I don't like shorts on the bike.
I almost always wear gloves and the jacket depends on the weather.
My riding boots are Sidi pull on style.
It's really not much of an issue.
