Thanks to Bruce for the helpful explanation ...
Being male, I've spent my fair share of time messing around with 4-wheeled
vehicles in the snow. I of course rapidly figured out that if the front
wheels aren't rolling, they can't steer. Some years later, I took physics
courses ... and I can even do vector diagrams!
I didn't realize it can happen so fast with a motorcycle. The explanation
that one normally doesn't recover if one locks up the front wheel on a curve
is very interesting. I will remember that stuff.
On my Honda Shadow, I've only had the guts to lock up the front wheel at
maybe 10 MPH while deliberately trying to do so. I've never done it at any
speed. At 10 MPH the front end shudders and skips a bit, then the bike is
stopped. I've gotta imagine that on a wet surface or on sand there is no
shuddering and skipping ... you probably just go down.
WTF are you trying to do, Bruce, singlehandedly ruin Reeky's time
honored and hard-won reputation?
The posters here aren't that bad. They normally include helpful advice
mixed in with personal attacks.
The worst historically has been the qmail list. But that is another topic.
This is one of the milder qmail responses. There have been those far worse
(but I'm too lazy to hunt for them):
