Actually I think I just found an answer to my first question - tail packBuy the large top case from JC Witless. I've got one on my ZG1000 and it's

not a Givi but it's quite serviceable. I have a soft tail pack for my SV
I assume you're talking about this one ?

It looks about like the Givi, and is about 1 " smaller in each
dimension than the E52 Givi. What differences ( other than price ) do
you find between them ? For $ 84 vs $ 500 ? Is it cheasy by
comparison ?
which is pretty decent (but cost more than 2x what the large JC Whitney
trunk cost) but a rigid top case is better in my opinion.

I have no experience with the Givi ones, but from what I've heard, they
are "better". Now, what that exactly means is up for debate. A lot of
Concours owners use both. Apparently, they are a close copy. So close,
that the mounts can be used for either trunk. I don't find the one from
Whitney to be cheesy. It is a decent, solid trunk. The "backrest pad"
is pretty crappy, but my wife doesn't mind it. It's kind of a softer
hard plastic than the rest of the trunk. There's also a stupid iron
cross sticker on the top of the Whitney one. It peels off easily enough
though.
I put some LEDs beneath the red plastic "lens" to act as running/brake
lights. Givi makes a specific taillight for theirs, which is an added
cost. This is mine once I got it done:

Looks good.
I've overstuffed it on many occasions already. It will hold both my
riding jacket and pants. Or my helmet. (But I wear a XXL or XXXL
helmet, so fitting two in is kind of difficult) It mounts well, and
removes easily if you want to bring it in to the hotel for the night.
