Paul, what caused you to be an animal activist?
Just curious. (Stagger Lee)

Just personal inclination.

Literally millions of dogs and cats are put to death every
year in this country, plus millions more that die outside, for no
reason other than 'no one gives a ***'. Not for food, or other
'harvesting' purposes, but simply 'no one fucking cares'. At the same
time, puppy-mills and breeding mills are busy turning out more and
more, for profit.
<snip>

Why should "for food" or "other harvesting purposes" make a
difference?

If you include wild animals, BILLIONS die for no other reason than
over population - just like cats and dogs in that respect. In nature,
it's extremely common to have an over-abundance of young - only the
strongest and fittest (or luckiest) surviving long enough to breed.
Why shouldn't you be equally vexed about their fate and do something
about that? Is it because we (mankind) have undertaken some sort of
responsibility towards the domestic animals? Nobody asked you or me
for a vote on that, did they? And besides, are we really
responsible? More realistically, domestic animals have made an easy
living off us (them adopting us, not the other way around).

Perhaps you should devote your time to rescuing all the young of
octupii (where only one or two out of a thousand survive). Ah, but
the ones eaten by predators serve as a food source, right? And the
euthanized cats and dogs do not? Where do you think they go? Maggots
aren't living creatures that need to be fed also? The soil needs to
be replenished with nutrients, which then benefits other life.

If you want to adopt a useless cause to devote your life to, you
probably can't do much better than the one you have chosen. Animals
will continue to live and die and their remains recycled back into the
environment - as they should be and will be, no matter how much time
and money you waste (time and money that could be used for far more
worthwhile causes).

It's sometime said here that people use religion as a crutch to give
their life meaning. It's seldom noted, however, how much more
ridiculous and vain are the things people replace it with. Saving
cats and dogs does not give your life any meaning or purpose. It's
simply letting yourself being controlled by nerousis.

Why don't you go bugger a bagger ? :-)
