The catch-22 of this hypocrisy of course is if Edwards (for example) gave
up all his wealth and bought a two-bedroom house and a toyota he'd never
get elected president at all.

Our system demands that those who run have money and influence. As a
consequence it's necessary for Edwards to hold on to what he's got in
order to get into a position where he can convince us we shouldn't.
