And it sucks. Being in a band, that is. I know.
BOOOORING !!!! Like you said - it becomes 'just a job, an obligation'
etc. I've played out in just about every format there is, and they
ALL suck as jobs. Big work for small money.
Small money? How about no money! I spent more on beer, dinner, travel,
time and GEAR than I ever made playing. Sad but true, but then again I
I wasn't counting expenses ;-0
wasn't in it for the money. And since I'm married, I didn't do it for
the chicks. I did it for the camraderie and the opportunity to try out
most every amp and guitar made :)- There was a running joke in the
band how I showed up at every gig with a dif amp. I'd do the same with
m/c's, but they cost too much :)- Good thing i didn't play the piano!
Sadly, I do :-) Ever try humping a Rhodes 88 around ? Or a
B3 ?
I'm tellin ya - the only money to be made is in the 'worst of
the worst' formats - wedding band. You go turn your brain off for
four hours, you collect a couple hundred for playing *** you're
emarassed to even know the name of, and you leave quick and pretend
you weren't there. Murph and The Magnificents, redux. BTW, I did two
gigs with Lou Marini, but that's neither here nor there nor now ....
That's when I skeedaddled. And when I was young, I never thought I'd
give up partying, but I did. Life changes; people change,
Yep. Funny, there came a point in my life when throwing up in
public just wasn't as much fun as it used to be.
Ha! I never did that - at least not while I was in the band... as an
audience member years ago, maybe :)-
I never did it on stage - although I DID see Joe Cocker do it
at The Academy ;-) He was opening for Traffic. He never even worried
about it, just stuck his head behind a stack, let loose, and kept on
singing. WHAT a gig ! That was right after I passed out in the
street from 'the fine columbian', as they say. Oh, the days of our
lives ....
I co-formed this band at 45yo and had a blast up until the last year
or so. Some folks became dependent on the extra income as a part-time
thing and they booked cheap, but numerous gigs, while I was going for
less but better paying ones.
Yeh, there's always different goals, and different levels of
comittment to them.
someone once told me, I like to hear myself type :)-
How typeical .....
