I was out riding my 88 K75S (30,000 miles)
and the battery light came on. So I decided to turn around and go back
home. When I got to the first traffic light, the engine killed. I push
started it and it ran for about a minute and died again. The only thing
that I've seen on the internet that might cause this is worn alternator
brushes. Is there anything else that might cause this problem?

Probably several things but I'd check the cheapest and easiest things first.
Batteries can fail suddenly, even new ones......and cables can come loose.

Alternator........Brushes ???? IIRC, alternators don't have brushes.
