Re: Building a bike vs buying one

I saw a nice looking Twin Cam Softail Custom on Ebay that a guy had
built with all HD parts, except for the trans and frame. His BIN price
was $8k, which I thought was pretty short money, and his ad said it had
1500 miles on it. This got me thinking about building a similar bike
for less than a factory HD-built bike. Obviously it *can* be done (I
assume the seller isn't taking a huge bath at 8K) but I've never priced
out individual components to compare.

I'm not interested in an OCC-type clown bike that can only be ridden 5
minutes for the camera - I'd want a stock appearing Softail Custom/Wide
Glide with maybe an aftermarket hi-po engine or a tweaked HD mill. I
realize the "assembled" title will mean it won't be worth the same as a
factory bike, but my guess is if I ever sold it I should get back what
I have into it. Anybody have any experience with this?

Pros of your own build-
You will get better parts for your money (more chrome than adding it
later)
You can get a larger engine, fatter tires, better tank, etc...
You can get what you want

Cons-
warranty is by part and not by dealer
you have to build it (could be fun)
you have to fix it (why get a middle man involved now?)
you have to have all the tools and whatever else it would take
you have to title an unknown frame
you might not be able to insure it easy

Some people sell complete kits (big bear?) and others choose to pick
the parts themselves. I considered doing this when HD dealers were
getting insane markups, but decided to restore and old indian instead.
