What REALLY "gets me" is the people who get involved in them. A friend of
mine seems drawn to them like a moth to a flame and he's been burned every
fucking time, yet he STILL keeps going back for more.

I had a boss like that. He was so sure that he was the smartest guy on the
block that he simply couldn't believe anyone else could possibly con him, and
he walked straight into ever scheme that came along, eyes wide open. He took
his ego trip to the extent that even after he'd lost his investments he would
never admit that he'd been had, nor would he call the police; according to
him, each of these con jobs was "going to pay off big in the near future".

I think that's how these schemes keep "working" (for some). The so-called
intelligent faction won't admit they've dropped a bollock, not even to
themselves, so they're ripe for another session of smooth talking and pretty
pictures.

A pyramid scheme is a form of gambling. The fist into the game can indeed make
some money, but you have to get your money out before the pyramid collapses,
which throws in the element of chance. Smart or not, educated or not, there
will always be a percentage of people who can't resist rolling the dice.
