"Jenkins' daughter, though, was a scientist employed by the Raytheon
Corporation in Massachusetts, and Jenkins revealed that he and his
daughter "had conducted experiments designed to acquire quantities of
atomic copper." They had turned this material over to "Lt. Azimoff,
United States Navy, for analysis at Columbia University." This
"Azimoff," who was not a lieutenant at all and spelled his name the way
you see it on the cover of this magazine..."
The "Lt. Azimoff" involvement leads me to wonder about Isaac Asimov's
politics concerning nuclear energy in respect to world peace and the
"balance of power" over the decades. A person's politics do evolve.
Perceptions change as powerful alliances are made and unmade.
Was Dr. Ike ever a "commie"? Was he ever on the McCarthy era
"Blacklist", or considered for the honor? What FOIA files are on the
web about the prolific science writer and SF author?
Asimov might even be forgiven if he once believed that international
communism was the best thing in the world for his people. Who wouldn't
sympathize with political movement if it permitted one's co-racialists
to advance, after a period of persecution?
At one point, Jews occupied about 25% of all the seats in the communist
central commitee, and Leon Trotsky (Lev Bronstein) avoided promotion to
a higher political office for fear of ethnic Russians believing that
the revolution was being hijacked by the Jews.
Asimov's co-racialists were very influential in the USSR's communist
party and in all scientific communities and the aerospace and defense
industries from the
Bolshevik revolution until the 1950's, when Stalin appeared to be about
to order yet another purge.
Today, there are only about 250,000 Jews remaining in the former Soviet
Union, in the wake of quotas restricting the number of Jews who could
be admitted to universities and affirmative action for ethnic Russians.
