Smaller bikes are a bit easier to handle. The only time they're more
dangerous is if you're passing and don't have enough power to get out
of the way fast enough.

Let me be the first here to say - You ARE both taking the MSF course,
right?

As a beginner, you will definitely feel more comfortable on a smaller
bike. There are many you'd enjoy. Your choices aren't bad. I'd go
smaller (cheaper,) so if you decide you want another style, it's not
such a big investment.

BTW, I have to ask...what's with your moniker? "Tied and true"? "Alter
Ego"?
