Don't forget that a cleaning requires very little preparation, very little
risk, probably under $5 worth of supplies and does not have to be performed by
a dentist. On the other hand, the supplies required to do a root canal and
crown cost significantly more, the incident of complications (most of which are
handled at no additional fee) are higher and the level of work is more
demanding. For the last point, you don't need a dentist to clean your teeth,
that's the job of a hygienist. So even if your dentist cleans your teeth he
probably charges based upon the cost of hygienist pay scale.
