Suzuki S40 as a 1st bike?

I rode for a short while in San Diego 25 years ago but I never owned my
own bike. It's time. I'm taking the MSF course in 2 weeks then will
write a check for my first bike. I'm seriously liking the 2006 S40...had
considered the Rebel 250 but that thought didn't last too long. The
bikes that appeal to me all seem to be "standard" or "cruiser" styles. I
also looked at the Kawasaki Vulcan 500 LTD and the Honda Shadow VLX 600
but they seem so "big".
I want it mainly as a commuter bike to and from work. I drive about 26
miles round trip each day with about 10 minutes of that at 70 mph. The
rest at 40 to 55 mph. I *might* take short day trips on the bike but
that will be a secondary use if at all. If I ever carry a passenger, it
will be for short rides only. My wife says she doesn't like being a
passenger on a bike. I'm 48, 5'8" and about 220 lbs.
Lastly, how much can I expect a typical medium-sized dealer to come down
from the MSRP on a bike like the S40?
All comments appreciated.
