The discussion was as to why I would want to wear protective gear.

The statistical odds of dropping your bike in the first six months of
riding are quite high, which I would mention to a new rider if asked.
But I would not recommend ATGATT -- I would leave that decision to the
other rider.

The most gear I ever wore has been denim trousers, a denim or leather
jacket, leather gloves, and a 3/4 helmet. The biggest road rash I
have ever received was the size of a nickle and barely broke skin. To
recommend to anyone what I did not do myself would be hypocritical.
