The average petrol head and even the average man
in the street has heard of Rossi just as they've heard of Schumacher.

My point exactly! And they never will if every bit of print is reserved for
Rossi...

But only insiders know about Hayden (or Alonzo) It's nothing to do with
being American, and everything to do with whether you're an A,B,C,...Z
list celebrity.

I don't doubt for a minute that Rossi, or Schuey have a huge following,
that's a given, but supposedly the "media" is a *news* source and I for one
expect to read news not an agenda driven press release, especially from the
BBC. That's the reason I watch it every night, as we get all that *** and
in huge quantities here and on an hourly basis too, but evidently we aren't
the only ones..

Exactly. And, just to add, there's nothing much anti-american about
race fans here. Colin Edwards is, ime, pretty popular here, as were
the like of Scott Russell and Schwantz before him. Which is the point
- the fans take to riders who have some personality, who seem to be
having fun, who don't sound like a press release when interviewed.

WTF? I that were true we'd have no idea Pedrosa even existed, for Christ's
sake Champ, that kid has the personality index somewhere between an ice cube
and a rock and he doesn't seem to have much trouble getting attention. When
Nicky showed up he was treated like he just fell off the turnip truck and
was constantly put down, among other things just for his Kentucky drawl and
southern twang, hell, he was even quoted in misspelled words and if you
don't think that's a put down, well, I suggest you think again. Now I don't
know if that type of dismissive bull*** was a product of anti-Americanism,
or just the stale European inferiority/superiority thing, but it's total
bull*** in any event, at least in my book. This is the same problem (in
reverse) that I have with Mark and his snide comments about Vale, I just try
hard not to play those kind of games and I damn sure don't like anyone, be
it Soup, or the MCN and especially the Beep attempting to run one on me.
It's supposed to be news and I think Hayden's current situation qualifies as
just that! I don't care where anybody calls home, but I do want to know what
they're doing and without some *** reporter's prejudice, or editor's
agenda.. (Sorry Dean)

Hayden, like most racers, isn't really like that. Which is fine, but
it means that while he may win races and championships, he probably
won't win many popularity contests.

So getting accurate news about anyone requires popularity? I hope that's not
the case, if so we all should pack it in right now! Be that as it may, that
kid is as clean as country water and is a breath of fresh air in MGP Sea of
fecal aroma. I see that as a huge plus, but again, that's just me, I realize
others may come to different conclusions, though hopefully they'll make it
by themselves and not be influenced by someone's prejudice..

Look, I understand that certain folks identify with a particular type of
perceived personality, for instance, I liked Sheene because he was a rascal,
if not a complete whore dog, I didn't really give a *** that he was a
Limey. I liked the King because he was in your face and didn't care who you
thought you were, not because he was a USAin. I respect Vale because he's
damn good and has the record to back it up, period. I don't particularly
care for Schwantz, because I think he's a dork. the list goes on and that's
just human nature, but one thing they all have in common is they did good
and were successful, that fact is undeniable! I've grown to expect agenda
driven news coverage about politics and I take the majority if it as just
that, but to me at least, some things are still sacred. I don't particularly
like all the adverts in newspapers, or the pop ups on the web, though I
understand why they are there, but I'll be dammed if I'm gonna accept
someone's agenda to influence how I view racer's and their racing. ***
that ***!
